The urban structure of Bosa is shaped by the highlights of its history. High up on the hill rises the Malaspina castle, the fortress that made Bosa ‘the key to Sardinia’, built in various stages from the 12th century onwards. On its square is the church of Nostra Signora de sos Regnos Altos (14th century), with an important cycle of Italo-Provençal frescos (1350-70). The more recent part of the town was developed in the 17th-19th century by the royal House of Savoy, kings of Sardinia, who encouraged the economic development of the area. Archeological remains of the original Phoenician colony and of the later Roman township are to be found on the sides of the Nieddu Mountain, in the Temo River Valley, near the ancient cathedral of St. Peter (1062 - 1073).
